Vietnam has AMAZING food. Here are pictures and descriptions of 5 of my favorite foods I got to eat last month.
1. Pho (pronounced fuh)
Description: a bowl of boiling water that you add in raw meat and raw eggs, cooked noodles, garlic, onions, sprouts, greens, and worcestershire sauce. The boiling water cooks everything.
2. Banh Khot
It tasted like a partially egg/partially batter mix fried in the shape of a shallow bowl with a cooked shrimp in it; but it is mainly made of rice flour and coconut milk. They’re served with greens, shredded carrots and sprouts, and fish sauce (that tastes like a mixture of vinegar and butter). This was one of my all time favorite things we got to eat.
3. Squid taco
Definitely not the official name. It’s made of the same rice flour/coconut milk batter as mentioned above but in the shape of a taco. It was filled with squid and sprouts and dipped in fish sauce that had some chili powder mixed in it. Delicious.
4. Fried banana
This one is a lot more simple to explain. It’s literally just a banana covered in batter and fried in oil. Not quite as obscure as the rest of the food, but definitely tasty enough to make the list.
5. Local cake
Description: Looks like a protein bar shaped lump of snot if I’m being honest. It’s super sticky. Like you can dangle it off your finger and it won’t fall to the ground because it’s that sticky. It was filled with peanuts. You peel off the layer of banana leaf as you eat it. I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to get another one of these, but I’m glad I tried it!
With love,
Hals
