So I just came across this recent study, that has honesty been done before, but it shows the top three perceptions young non-Christians have of Christians in the US.
1.) Antigay
2.) Judgmental
3.) Hypocritical
Unbeknownst to American Christians, that’s the identity most of them are carrying and walking in, but the sad part is that these three words do honestly accurately describe many Christians.
For this reason, I am sorry. I AM SORRY! I am so sorry that we as Christians are possibly the main thing keeping you from God. I am sorry that so many of us have taken the Christ out of Christianity.
Please forgive us! Please forgive us of all the embarrassing, judgmental, hypocritical, and hateful things we have done “In the Name of God.”
As I continue to read these red letters of Christ I am so attracted to him, completely fascinated by him, my feet are swept out from beneath me, I lose my breath around him. I am in complete awe.
And that’s just it, we as Christians have been trying to force Christ upon all of you instead of just inviting you to taste the goodness that is Jesus. He is so fascinating and attractive, yet I believe many of us have lost this fascination with him, which is why we try to make you accept him through harsh, judgmental, and hypocritical words and actions. I’m sorry.
But guess what?!
I want you to do something for me. Just entertain this thought for me:
what if they are wrong? What if God really is LOVE? What is the fruits of the Spirit
really are beautiful things like peace, patience, kindness, joy, love, and goodness (Shane Claiborne).
Is it not the gospel of John that says ,“God so loved the world,” so he sent his son to save it not condemn it! That’s what is so fascinating to me about Christ! That he looked at the prostitutes, the money embezzlers, the murderers, the adulterers, the homosexuals, the liars, the thief’s, and said, “I have come for them because I love them. They are broken and I love them.” So he suffered for them, was betrayed for them, was crucified for them, and even tasted death for them. For you; for me.
What kind of God does that!?!?! It's so scandalous!
And Christians, we are just as broken. We need God just as much as everyone else. When did being gay become the deal breaker with God? Did God not use a lying prostitute named Rahab? Oh, and the greatest King of Israel, David, he was an adulterer. Moses was a murderer. Samson was a lustful angry man. Paul persecuted the early church.
So if God should choose to use us, then we should be grateful but not think too highly of ourselves. And if upon meeting someone we think God could never use, we should think again.
For those of you who are on a sincere spiritual journey, I hope that you do not reject Christ because of Christians. We have always been a messed-up bunch, and somehow God has survived the embarrassing things we do in His name. At the core of our “Gospel” is the message that Jesus came “not [for] the healthy… but the sick.” And if you choose Jesus, may it not be simply because of a fear of hell or hope for mansions in heaven (Claiborne).
God loves you just as you are, so come just as you are. He loves you because he loves you.
