This month passed by crazy fast. At the beginning of the month we bussed in from Cambodia and after a painful 3 hours of confusion and refusing to pay bribes at the border, we finally crossed into Vietnam. One more glorious overnight bus landed my team in Nha Trang, a beautiful seaside city surrounded by mountains where we have spent the last 3 weeks. We’ve been teaching English night classes and offering English tutoring through the local church. We’ve also been meeting up with locals to practice English and build relationships. Overall it has been a very relaxed month, mostly because Vietnam is celebrating the Lunar New Year which is celebrated to the extent which we celebrate Christmas so most everyone is on holiday.
I would have hoped that so much free time would have enabled me to really press into a deeper understanding of God, but I really didn’t do much of that this month. It was hard for me to seek God this month partially because there are so many distractions here (like the beach) and partially because I’m exhausted of seeking God and fining nothing. Next month all the guys (a whopping 6 out of the 40 people on the squad) will be together on our own team. We’ll be in Indonesia and I imagine that there will be even more to distract me from my pursuit of God; pray that God will give me a supernatural desire to seek after him.
Although it hasn’t been a month of spiritual progress, it’s been a fun month. Our team rented 3 mopeds for the entire month to get around the city, that’s been a total blast. The roundabouts are particularly interesting to navigate, it’s just about the most chaotic driving I’ve ever experienced yet I haven’t seen a single accident this whole month. We also got to go camping in the mountains for a weekend and enjoyed the festivities of the lunar New Year including a massive 20-minute firework show. I’m almost done reading Wild at Heart and I’ve been playing the guitar more and even trying to write some of my own music. We’re living with a very kind family on the top floor of their house which overlooks the ocean. They feed us 3 meals a day of delicious and authentic Vietnamese food and treat us like family. As always, the hospitality of Asia blows me away.
I’ll soon put together a video of my time in Vietnam, but for now here’s the video I made for Cambodia.
