Micah 6:8 says, “…and what does the Lord require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God”
This verse has become one of my life verses, especially after graduating college. I read it in a devotional about a year ago, and it’s stuck ever since. For me, it’s a constant reminder of the basic, fundamental things the Lord really requires of me as one of His kids. As I start this journey into “real” adulthood, I want to be known as someone who is (if anything) fair, kind, and walking with God.
The verse has three points, so I want to highlight why I chose “Walk Humbly” to print on a t-shirt. I looked up a couple different translations and noticed something:
NIV: act justly, love mercy, walk humbly
ESV: do justice, love kindness, walk humbly
NKJV: do justly, love mercy, walk humbly
TLV: practice justice, love mercy, walk humbly
AMP: be just, love kindness, walk humbly
The only point that isn’t phrased any differently in different translations is “walk humbly”. I guess there’s just no other way to say it: put your pride aside, submit yourself and your plans to the Lord, and walk on the path He has created just for you – only you! And when you do that, you are never walking alone because He is with you. He’s showing you where to put your feet, which turn to take, when to “duck, dodge, dip, dive, and dodge” if you catch my drift. This doesn’t necessarily mean that life gets easier, in fact, life usually isn’t ever easy… but it’s a little more fun and definitely worth it.
However, I have found that when we walk with God, other characteristics of Him come a tad bit more naturally. He is a fair and just God. He is loving, merciful, and kind. Oh, well would you look at that.. those are the other things in that Micah 6:8 list. 🙂 The closer we walk with God, the better we get at being fair and loving people, showing mercy, and being kind. We get better because we begin to think more like Him and our hearts become more in tune with His, they begin to beat the same. And that’s when the miracles happen.. that’s when life and your purpose begin to click.. when everything begins to make a little more sense.. and it’s not easy, but it’s definitely better.
Anyway, I’ve realized it all starts when we humble ourselves, our agenda, our wish-list, and submit ourselves to walking side-by-side with God. And this is my challenge for you as well: Walk Humbly.
