South
American Road Trip
Since Saturday afternoon we have spent the
past 6 days on a bus on the great South American road trip to Cochabamba,
Bolivia. After a total of 7 bus rides
and almost 50 hours spent on the bus we made it Thursday afternoon.
Saturday afternoon we said goodbye to the
beach at Huanchaco and left for Lima.
After a 10 hour bus ride we made it to Lima. Being on the World Race means that there is a
lot time spent waiting for busses so we had about 12 hours to explore the city
until our next bus ride to Arequipa, 18 hours away. Once we got to Lima the first thing we did
was head to the mall to find an American restaurant and the closest Starbucks
and Dunkin Doughnuts. That night we
boarded another bus for Arequipa in the middle of the Peruvian desert. Our bus ended up being 3 hours late so once
we got to Arequipa we had to immediately board another bus for another 6 hours
drive, no bathroom break or lunch stop.
It seemed like the longest bus ride ever. We were all starving and ate anything we
could find in our bags. After 24 of
being on a bus we made it to Puno.
We got to Puno, on the shore of Lake
Titicaca, Monday night. We spent the
night there and had all Tuesday to explore the lake and Puno. Tuesday morning we went on a tour of the
floating islands of the Uro Indians off the coast of Puno and spent the
afternoon eating the best pizza I’ve had in a while. Early Wednesday morning we left for the
Bolivian border and then to La Paz. After
spending almost 2 hours going through customs because they had to individually
scan each $20 bill of our stack of $7155 for all of us to get into the country
we boarded another bus to La Paz. Thursday
morning we left La Paz for Cochabamba, Bolivia where we will be for the next
month.
