Imagine…

From 12/16

Imagine being a junior in high school figuring out where you want to go to college, a civil engineer just finishing your MBA about to start your doctorate and a former visiting professor at UC Berkely, a hairdresser, mom, and grandma, a psychiatrist, or a soldier finishing your last month on duty. Your life is normal and you have things going for you.

Then in one moment your life takes a drastic turn. You have a stroke or 6, you are in a car accident, you fall and hit your head, you survive a plane crash, or the truck you are working on blows up. Suddenly you wake up after spending months in a coma. The normal life you were living is now over and you have to relearn how to walk and speak. Part of your body is now paralyzed. Your brain isn’t normal, it doesn’t function like it used to, and you may spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair. Your spouse is going to leave you because “in sickness and in health” is just too hard now.   You need someone to help you eat, bathe, and go to the bathroom.

These are the people I get to spend my week with at camp Higher Ground. They have acquired brain injuries.   They used to be like me and you but now their life is different. Their life is different but instead of being angry or depressed in their current situation wishing they could have their old life back they are happy, full of joy, and so thankful God gave them a second chance on life. They say God is good even in the worst situation. They give God glory for getting to share their story and hope lives will be changed through them. They have chosen to live victoriously no matter what their situation is. They have experienced months of grueling recovery and therapy. They have seen God heal their bodies. They have had doctors tell them that they will never be able to walk, talk, or move- only to be walking, talking, and moving.

They are truly inspirational.

What’s Next?
Sputh Africa is unfortunately almost over and Wednesday afternoon we are taking the train to Maputo, Mozambique.  There we will be working at a boys home outside the capital and hopefully we will also do a medical clinic in the bush for a week.  I can’t believe its almost month 7!
