In February, we lived in community with the Asian version of the Von Trapp family – though this time there were four kids, the mom from Australia and the dad from the Philippines, and hymns of praise were climbing the mountains instead of “do-re-mi”. (Though Colleen did teach me “Do-Re-Mi” on the piano.) As we cleaned and did the dishes, we’d burst into song – it was a real life musical.

Since we’ve arrived in Asia in January, we’ve dusted off our hymnals and broken out the classics. The melodies and words bring a comfort that is much deeper than something strictly tradition could manifest. The songs are rooted in Truth. The musical composition is rich. The circumstances that compelled the writers to put pen to paper are real, sometimes incredibly painful, and echo of a faith that stands the test of time. They are men and women who encountered Jesus and were marked by His love.

By hearing these words, singing these testimonies and praise, I am marked by His love. This video is of the three sisters singing “In the Garden”… one of my favorites. May their words touch you deeply and may you join me in reflecting upon these couple questions:

  • Am I pulling away from work, ministry, life to meet with my Savior in the garden?

  • Am I inviting people to come to the garden with their Savior? Sharing Christ doesn’t have to be a choose heaven or hell message, but a message of hope, of love and of deep relationship with Christ. Our Savior is waiting in the garden.
