For 3 days this week my team and I spent our time in a smaller village outside of El Nido named Denat, where we helped with the building of a church. The first day we showed up and saw a field with several logs and some people standing around. So our first task was to remove the bark from the logs so that they would be shaven and ready to use for building. So in order to do this we took smaller sticks and beat on the logs all day long until the bark would come flying off and leave the tree clean and ready to use for building. While I set to work on the logs some people grabbed machetes and began to clear out the field so we could build a foundation for where the church was to be. Then the next two days we spent our time moving dirt to fill up the area of the floor and placing the beams of the church into the ground, it was really exciting to see how it all was coming together, but I’m really sad that we will not be able to see the end result.
