Kind of a cliché title, huh? I guess it’s the only way to sum up my week spent at Lumbobo Farms. Yes one week of my time in Africa was spent at this mission based farm run by One Heart Africa. We watered, weeded, harvested and at the end got to deliver it to children to bring home and share with their families over the weekend. It was a dream there: golden light, endless rows of green crops, ripe papayas, fresh meals, and dogs that were safe to pet. There was a waterpower there that we could climb and watch the sun sink behind the distant mountains. While the majority of my time in Swaziland has been spent living among 46 other 19 year olds, this week there were only thirteen of us. Never thought I would say that living with 12 teenage girls would be a quiet escape but that is exactly what it was for me.
My particular mission for the week was helping prepare meals and tea times for the staff of the farm and also our teams. My teammates Iggs and Emmy worked with me alongside Nomsa, the existing cook on staff at the farm. Let me tell you this woman is a hoot. She speaks hardly any english but her hugs, laugh and dance moves do all the speaking for her. It was so much fun to just be with her. While making the meals we got to go out and pick fresh vegetables and use them to cook. This is one reason why I call this blog farm to table. Because we quite literally brought the produce from the farm and created a meal from it.
The other reason you might ask? This has more of a spiritual meaning. I learned at the farm that this farm radiates the Lord. There is a reason why He includes so many references to harvesting, plants, and other farm related things in the word. It is because there is so much to be learned from this aspect of His creation. That once we harvest his word and create a meal with it, we can sit at a table with Him and other believers and partake in a real meal together. Now that’s the kind of farm to table action I’m living for.
