– my Granddaddy

A Franciscan Benediction:

May God bless us with discomfort

At easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships,

So that we may live from deep within our hearts.

May God bless us with anger

At injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people,

So that we may tirelessly work for justice, freedom, and peace.

May God bless us with tears
To shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, hunger, and war,
So that we may reach out our hands to comfort them and to turn their pain to joy.

And may God bless us with enough foolishness
To believe that we can make a difference in the world,
So that we can do what others claim cannot be done:
To bring justice and kindness to all.
Amen.

Have you ever had something happen to you that you thought was bad but it turned out to be for the best?

Many, many things. I think break ups are typically that way.

What was the last movie, TV show or book that made you cry or tear up?

Haha, if it was socially acceptable, I think I would at least tear up at every incredibly sweet or sad or happy part of every movie/tv show.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
To live a broken and vulnerable life. Much easier said than done.

What was the last experience that made you a stronger person?

Just over the past several months I've needed to really trust God and have faith that He's in control of my life. It's hard.

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

Haha. I don't think anything. I was a pretty good kid.

When was the last time you had an amazing meal?

Thanksgiving πŸ™‚

What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received?

I don't think I've ever received a bad gift. At least not one that I can remember. But I know the most recent great one has been my Chaco's that I received for Christmas last year. They rock

What do you miss most about being a kid?
Playing outside with my neighbors. We used to play Capture the Flag around my house, and sardines down my whole street and so much more. We do it on campus sometimes, but it's just not the same.

What is your first memory of being really excited?

Well, for one, I have an awful memory, and two, I'm usually pretty excited, but one time I remember very specifically was getting to see my best friend after being in South Africa for the first time in about 2 years! (2 years after they left to be missionaries there!)

What was the first thing you bought with your own money?

I don't remember.

When was the last time you were nervous?
Tuesday. I am the student coordinator for our Tuesday night worship service on campus called Rooted and I get nervous every week before it starts. I don't do very well at trusting God and just having faith that everything will come together just the way he wants it. I like to have control, and when that doesn't work out (which is most of the time), I get very nervous. Learning.

What is something you learned in the last week?

I've always "known" it, but being with family isn't great for everyone. For some people, family just makes for arguments, tears, pain, stress, and so much more. I'm super blessed to have such an incredible family, but my heart is very heavy for those who don't.

What story does your family always tell about you?

Haha, I had to call my dad and ask what story they would tell, because I have no idea. He said that they don't really tell many stories about me but one that's funny is that when I was in elementary school and would play soccer sometimes I would be seen running down the field hand-in-hand with my best friend. Dad says I'm still like that in a slightly different way, haha.

At what age did you become an adult?

I still don't feel like an adult.

Where is the coolest place you have ever been to?
Alaska is the most naturally beautiful place I've ever been. Or really just the view after hiking up hill for hours. That's always beautiful, too.
Rome, Italy is the most historically beautiful.
And then everywhere is Central America is the most culturally beautiful.
There's no way I can pick just one cool place…

What is one word that you would use to describe yourself?
Excited!

If you knew you could not fail, what would you do?
Talk about Jesus all the time. I constantly deal with feeling inadequate, so I'm always afraid of not doing it well enough. I know in my head that I am inadequate, but that God is enough, but it doesn't seem to change my actions.
