I was challenged by a teammate to share a poem that I wrote in Nepal. It was inspired by a squadmate of mine who said that she wasn’t the favorite of our new international friend out of our whole squad. This poem isn’t about her, but it’s about anyone who has compared themselves to others and felt like they weren’t good enough. Comparison and finding my identity in Christ alone and not in the world have been things that God has been teaching me lately. I’m still a work in progress, but I hope this poem speaks to anyone who’s ever struggled with these things.
We’re Not That Different:
We’re not the same in the way you wear your hair,
Or what you wear,
But you and me, we’re not that different.
I’ve walked in the same shoes you’re walking into,
I’ve been to all the places you’ve been to,
You and me, we’re not that different.
I’ve told myself all the same lies,
About how I’m not the favorite of that girl or guy,
And somehow feel like that defines my worth,
I don’t even know where that lie came to birth,
But it’s there and you just can’t shake it,
You and me, we’re not that different.
I know your walk, I know your face,
I’ve been in your shoes and in your place,
I know the same self-condemnation that comes from comparing yourself in the first place,
You and me, we’re not that different.
We don’t walk on the same side of the road,
It’s about the saddest story that’s been told,
How did we meet?
Guess it was kismet,
You and me, we’re not that different.
Do me a favor, stop telling yourself those lies,
Maybe it would help me to give it another try,
We can break this cycle together,
In harmony and not as enemies,
You and me,
We’re not that different.
Fundraising Update:
I have currently raised $15,967 with your help!! Thank you so much! I still have $1,394 left to raise in 3 days (or 4 days if you live in America, it’s already Nov. 27th here) to be fully funded by Nov. 30th!
That means that if:
~10 people donated $139 each
OR
~20 people donated $70 each
OR
~30 people donated $46 each
I would be fully funded!
*I know these are strange amounts, so if God puts another amount on your heart, feel free to give whatever you feel called to, whether that be big or small. Honestly, if God wanted me to be fully funded by 1,394 people each donating $1, that would be amazing and nothing is too difficult for God!
“Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man, this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.‘ ” ~Mark 10:27
