Ever since we are little, we gain a little bit more independence as time goes on. When you first learn to walk, you no longer need to be carried. When you finally master eye-hand coordination, you no longer need someone else to feed you. The same goes for when you get a job, a car, etc. These are all things that help us to no longer be dependent on those who raised us.
Though I may be able to now walk on my own, feed myself, and hold sophisticated conversations, I have learned I will always be dependent on my heavenly father. I used to yearn to accomplish things on my own. To be able to say, “I did this”. Sometimes, I cannot achieve all I set out to do in my own strength. God has shown me that it is okay to ask for help. In fact, He prefers it. God is able to use each of us so much more when we lay down our egos and realize we are nothing without Him. For me to constantly realize that I can do nothing of significance apart from Him is both humbling and comforting. Humbling, because it completely obliterates whatever pride I may feel in my accomplishments. Comforting, because it reassures me that it is okay to lean on Him for all things and that He is the one at work, I am just a tool He chooses to use.
John 15:4-5
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
Abide- to remain. Every christian remains inseparably linked to Christ in all areas of life.
