“The Lord is asking you to go on a journey with him that is going to be the craziest thing you have ever done.  It is going to stretch you and you will not come back the same.  But only if you say ‘yes’ to what he has for you.”

These were the words I heard from leadership at our base in Guatemala after a meeting about my financial status.

As I was preparing to go stateside for the wedding of one of my World Race squadmates, I was told that I would be going on staff with AIM which would require me to raise more monthly support than what I have had.  In essence, I was told not to get on a return flight until the funds were pledged.

In the whirlwind of emotion of returning home for an extended period and still walking out obedience to whatever the Lord would put before me, I gave my “yes” to whatever this journey would be.

I struggled understanding the provision of the Lord.

I know that this season I was called to be in Guatemala.  Why was he pulling me away?  And what journey was wanting to send me on in this condition?

The next day, in my time with the Lord, he reminded me about the story of the Israelites who spied the promised land.  They came back viewing the “giants” of the land and viewing themselves as “grasshoppers”.

The Lord asked me, “As you see these giants before you, are you a grasshopper?”

I responded, “There are no grasshoppers here!”

Hours later, our group gathered outside in a circle when it happened.  Me and my teammate, Ryan, were suddenly being commissioned to go on a journey with the Lord.  We were asked to travel from Antigua to our home in San Marcos La Laguna in Lake Atitlan, roughly 3.5 hours driving.

On this journey, however, we were sent with no money, food, water, or place to rest our head.  Instead we would trust in the Lord’s provision.

Perfect…

Just 24 hours before I was kicking rocks about the Lord’s provision, now I have to trust it in a way I never have.

As I was prepping to leave with Ryan, the Lord gave me these instructions about this unexpected journey:

1. Don’t ask anyone for anything.

2. Don’t use any money.

3.  Love and bless everyone.  In doing so I will provide everything you need.

4. Those who receive you, allow them bless you.  Those who do not receive you, dust off your sandals and keep going.

I drank two cups of water on my way out the door, not sure when the next time water would be available.

The women of the house lined up like cheerleaders, encouraging us as we walked out the door.

With a thousand thoughts running through my mind, the loudest voice was saying “I don’t see any grasshoppers here!”

And so the journey began…
