There is this amazing guy named Bob Goff who wrote this amazing book called “Love Does.” If you haven’t read it yet, you should, like now! There is a chapter in this book titled “Lose the Cape.” The opening quote says,” I used to think I should talk about everything, but now I know it’s better to keep some things a secret.” In this chapter Bob talks about the importance of not wearing a cape when you’re a superhero. Capes are all for show. Capes can get caught on things and cause issues as seen in the Disney movie, The Incredibles. He mentions how when Jesus did incredible things he would say something like,”tell no one.” Jesus set a higher standard for us as Christains. Jesus tells us that there is a better way than telling people about what we’re doing all the time. There is no need for capes to get snagged on something, especially ourselves. As our host puts it, true servant leaders and incredible people often have to be pushed into the spotlight, not wearing a cape or boasting in their leadership. It the leaders with the servant mindset that do the truly incredible things. Jesus desires for us to be secretly incredible. “Secretly incredible people keep what they do one of God’s best-kept secrets because the only one who needs to know, the God of the universe, already knows” (Bob Goff). After all, our goal is Jesus, not ourselves. In order to be secretly incredible you don’t need anything-you just need to do things and do them with God. God will use the humble ones, the ones that don’t necessarily get picked first, to do big things. These humble people are the secretly incredible ones who do things to do them, not to get the attention. As Bob Goff says, ” I wouldn’t be surprised, though, if they were people just like us and were wearing undershirts that said “Be Awesome. And I’ll bet you one more thing: They weren’t wearing capes.”

I love this chapter and as I read it, I reflected on people in my life that are secretly incredible. I had the opportunity to meet one of them this month; her name is Peace. What a fitting name. Peace exemplifies everything it means to be secretly incredible. Peace raises 40 young girls to love and serve the Lord on a daily basis. Peace puts everyone before herself and always points the credit elsewhere. Peace embodies the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness gentleness, and self control. She gets up every morning, serves us and the 40 girls breakfast, and then goes to the market to shop for the next meal. She loves the girls deeply, as seen through the abundance of hugs and kisses she gives. She teaches the girls how to worship by teaching them how to play instruments as well as sing songs. Peace infuses scripture into every aspect of their lives and ensures they learn the meaning and not just the verse. Peace is a servant. Peace is strong. Peace looks like Jesus and it’s beautiful. Peace for sure has an undershirt that says, ” Be Awesome!” But she doesn’t even need the reminder. Peace is awesome because she serves out of the overflow of Jesus’ love for her. She is secretly incredible and always points to Jesus.

Thank you Peace for serving me and my team as we have lived with you for the past few weeks. Thank you for serving and loving these girls recklessly. Thank you for showing us how to be secretly incredible without even knowing.

Thank you for reading this blog! Thank you for your continued prayers! Love you all SO much!
