Happy New Year! As a new year treat I thought I would give you some insight into my life as a world racer.

Lots of world racers so far have come up with their lists of how to know you’re world racer. Well there’s now been a whole bunch of times that have led me to think “You know you’re a world racer when…” and a load of other things that I can think up that fit that.

So, without further ado, you know you’re a world racer when:

  • You forget whether you’re on a bus, train or plane – our coach went over a bump in the road and the first think I thought was ‘turbulence’!
  • You wake up after 8am and feel like you’ve wasted some of the day – when you can work from 5.30am for 2 hours before breakfast, a 9am rise seems wasted.
  • You wake up not knowing what you’re going to be doing that day but it doesn’t bother you at all – we really have to be flexible with our days because anything could be asked of us.
  • You drop toilet paper into the toilet and think “Oh no! Was that supposed to go in the bin?” – I’ve never reached in after if I have made that mistake though, I just make that mistake very rarely.
  • You climb into the back of a truck and actually wish that the roof hadn’t been attached – standing up in the back of a moving vehicle is much more comfortable.
  • You eat as much as you can every meal time – you might not know when the next meal will be, or whether gruelling work will be on task and so you’ll need the energy.
  • A meal including fried chicken or chips is a treat, and a trip to somewhere like McDonald’s is a meal out – restaurants may happen once or twice on the race at most it seems.
  • Something happens to you and you think about how you’re going to blog about it – at least you know you’re getting to share your life with your loved ones, I guess.
  • You see another white person and you really want to know who they are and why they are here – especially if they’re the same nationality as you are, that’s amazing!
  • You look forward to telling one of your team mates something they could be doing better – not because you’re vindictive but because it excites you to be in a community that encourages each other to grow and for you to see how God is developing them into being an ever improving person.
  • You look forward to hearing from your team mates about something you could be better at – because you know they see the you you can become, not the faults you think define yourself, instead of having to get defensive.
  • The internet is made available to you and you inwardly feel super excited – you don’t know what to do with internet that loads at UK speeds, FB and email only take 2 mins instead of the 30+ mins you would usually need.
  • You want to go to the shop so you immediately start thinking who in your group will be prepared to walk the 200ft distance with you – for safety, going alone is not allowed on the race.
  • Someone from home leaves you a message on facebook or email and you are touched to the core with appreciation for that person – people haven’t forgotten you 😀
  • You climb under your mosquito net and onto your sleeping pad at night and don’t think anything of it – I realised after getting in that I wasn’t wishing for the time I would have a bed again, it just felt perfectly normal.
  • You wake up in the middle of the night, but never think ‘where am I?’ because you don’t care – you move so much you don’t have to worry about what country you’re in, let alone locality.

So that’s it for now, but I’ll probably share more in the future. In the meantime…

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM TEAM SILOAM!
