It’s weird to say, but I honestly don’t know if I’ve really grown on the race until this month in Panama. But oh, how I’ve learned.

I’ve learned to Love – without agenda, without expectation of change, without language – just pure Love. In a way, I’ve become who I am. I’ve grown deeper into the one my Love has made me to be.

And it’s beautiful.

Because, you see, when you Love, truly truly Love, the little sleep you got last night doesn’t make a difference. The long day you just had of going from thing to thing to thing doesn’t matter. Because in that moment when your eyes catch sight of that individual – that human worthy and made of Love – everything else vanishes. You’re filled with joy over their very existence, and all of a sudden, you have all the energy in the world. Energy to carry as many kids on your back (and front and sides) as possible before toppling over and hearing their sweet laughter and silly mockery as they point to the mud all over your legs. Energy to converse in a language that you don’t speak because with enough hand motions, facial expressions, and trying to recall the little language you have picked up, it will eventually lead to hugs and smiles and friendship. Energy to race up the muddy hill or towards the dark ocean with your new friend because there’s nothing more free.

I think this is why we’re told to “let Love and faithfulness never leave you”. Because when we Love, we step into joy and strength and energy and freedom. To be Loved is to be free. To Love others is to set the other free. And just as Love can only be experienced in communion, freedom can only be truly grasped in its attempt to be shared.

So Love.

Wave to the stranger on the beach.

Look into the eyes of that woman you pass by everyday on your way to work.

Wash the dishes for your partner.

Pick a flower for your mom.

Clean up garbage when you see it.

Point out the goodness in someone.

Smile on the overly squished bus.

Speak that language you don’t really know with that accent you don’t really have.

Pet the dog that always comes around your house.

Say hello or good morning to the cashier while you get groceries.

Invite the new family in town for ice cream.

Ask questions about people’s favourite things and then listen.

Share your own stories.

Show people that they are worthy of your time, your heart, your attention, your care.

Because they are.

Panama and all of the beautiful people I’ve gotten to meet here have taught me how very simple it is to Love. It’s power is unmatched. And there’s nothing I want more than to be Love to every person and thing I interact with.

Panama, thank you for your hospitality. For showing me that things as simple as waving to the strangers outside your door can lead to family.
