What role do artists play in the Kingdom of God? That’s a legitimate question. We can tangibly see how teachers fit into the Kingdom. The role of musicians is crystal clear. How those with pastoral and shepherding gifts fit into a ministry setting is exceptionally obvious.
But what about the artists? The painters, the photographers? Or the sculptors? The designers? How about glass-blowers? Or interior designers? The poets need a place. The story-tellers have a job, right?
Is there a place amongst the masses for that “eclectic girl” who doesn’t socialize at church? Or that accountant who is actually wildly gifted at pottery…where does he fit? Or maybe someone like myself. A portrait photographer. Where do I fit? What role do I play? Are my gifts needed? How do they benefit the body of Christ? How can they be used to draw people to Jesus?
These are the questions that have plagued me these past few weeks. And while I am far from well-versed on the subject…here’s what the Lord has been teaching me:
1. Artists are needed.
“But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired. If they were all one member, where would the body be? But now there are many members, but one body.” -1 Corinthians 12:18-20
“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them.” -Romans 12:6
When we are operating out of the gifts God has so graciously given us, we are giving glory to Him! No matter how seemingly obsolete, insignificant, or obscure…every gift is poignant, purposeful, and valuable to God. Therefore, they must be seen as valuable to Christians. Encourage one another in their gifts, because that is a picture of God’s love!
2. Artists reflect the adventurous heart of God
“Wear your traveling clothes as you eat this meal, as though prepared for a long journey. Wear your sandals, and carry your walking sticks in your hands. Eat the food quickly, for this is the LORD’s Passover.” -Exodus 12:11
