Today we headed out to meet up with a young believer named Petr to encourage him. He led us on a 20 minute hike from the city center to a gorgeous waterfall. We had a blast as we took off our shoes and were able to walk across the top and then hiked down the other side.
Petr and Ben decided to take a swim in their jeans. We thought they were a bit crazy as it wasn’t very warm and being in sopping wet jeans didn’t seem to be a great idea.
Turns out they had the right idea as they got a great swim and soon after it started to rain.
We continued our hike as it was only raining lightly and we were hoping it would end. But, instead as we hiked on enjoying the beautiful scenery the skies let loose.
I, unfortunately, was the only one of our World Race group who hadn't brought their rain jacket. Oops! So, I proceeded to chat with Petr in the rain about Romans 14 and get soaked to no end. It was actually a very cool conversation as he, like many Serbians we have encountered, struggles with the government. During the conflict between the Balkan states Serbians were lied to by the government. There is a lack of trust a rebellious spirit that exists. This can be seen in the graffiti that is everywhere.
Petr likes the rebellious attitude and so wrestles with his new belief in God and how that impacts his graffiti habit or his attitude toward the leaders of the country. In the end, we arrived back into the city center soaked and freezing cold, but having enjoyed some very cool views and having an awesome conversation.
Petr also decided Ben and I were adventurous enough that he wants to go do some more hiking. I am looking forward to that as it was fun to learn about and from Petr and to see some of the amazing beauty Serbia has to offer.
