10 Things I Learned Month 1: Mozambique
10. An ice cold Coca Cola tastes better on a 100 degree African day.
9. Cake is the love language of many. Mostly 11, 20 something females.
8. Everyone enjoys the Whip & Nae Nae. Oh, watch me.
7. I didn’t pack enough soap or deodorant, hopefully Asia sells Dove.
6. Having electricity and running water are a luxury which can be taken from you at any moment. And I mean ANY moment.
5. At the end of the day, everyone is human. We all want one thing, to be loved.
4. Smiles are universal. They cross all language barriers, cultural diversities and socioeconomic boundaries.
3. A cool breeze is God’s reminder that He will always take care of us. Even when we are sweaty messes.
2. Living in community is hard. It is challenging. It is stretching. It is sometimes uncomfortable but is in those moments in which we grow the most.
1. We serve a BIG God. He created each and every one of us for a purpose. It’s hard to see that from the comforts of our living room.
Month 1 is in the books and let me tell you, it was an awesome adventure. We were most certainly spoiled month 1 with amazing food, hospitality, electricity, running water, delicious cakes and spaghetti on Sunday’s. Getting to know the boys [and Angie] at Beacon of Hope was an honor of a lifetime and I was sad to leave.
The biggest takeaway for this month is servanthood. The boys we worked with were servants to each other, to us and to Angie. They humbly served others with good attitudes and dignity. If I took anything from this month it is to serve others with humility .
