What words come to mind when you look at the pictures below?

Loss? Devastation? Tragedy? Disaster?

It was my last day in New York. Me and four guys on my team headed to Breezy Point, an area hit really hard by Hurricane Sandy. We got directions to the site where 111 houses were burned down in the storm. We turned the corner, and fell silent to the images in front of us.

I remember thinking, "How can God let this happen?" I was angry, sad, hurting for the people who lived where these houses once stood.

Moments later, I started to talking to a man walking through the ruble that used to be his house. I asked him how he was doing through all of this, and he smiled and said, "This is stuff. I can get a new house, new furniture. My family escaped this alive, I would have never been able to get them back."

WOW.

For a wannabe missionary, I had spent a lot of time that week focusing on the material loss these people were dealing with. I had totally loss sight of the value of life itself.

When I got back from New York, I received sobering news that night that a friend had just died in a motorcycle accident. He was 21. Although I may not understand why it was his time to go, I do understand that I have a reality to face.

Tomorrow is never guaranteed. We don't have time to wait to change the world. We have to start right now. We have to start with the next person we come in contact with. Because if we wait, and wait, and wait… we could miss it.
