Broken Chains

At the start of sixth grade most of us are enjoying school, getting involved in sports, and beginning to gain a sense of who we are as individuals in this big crazy world. I look forward to a day where a healthy childhood is the norm but sadly most will not experience that this side of heaven. That is the story of our friend Mangal. He didn’t receive the stability and security we all desire and NEED at such a young age. When he was 12, he was possessed by a demon. He was suffering from severe mental illnesses and was constantly battling against thoughts and actions that were not his own. For 13 years, he suffered at the hands of darkness with no hope. He was chained up and beaten by the local village people in an attempt to control him. He often lashed out – hurting himself and others. He broke his mother’s hand as she attempted to console him and his own leg over 6 times. One day, our host got word of his story and went to visit him. After analyzing the situation, he realized this was more than a mental illness or paranoia. He prayed and casted out the evil spirits that were tormenting Mangal and the Lord had mercy on him and delivered him. For 3 years, Mangal has been a devoted follower of Jesus. He has personally experienced his healing power and it’s amazing to be around him and hear of the great miracles the Lord has done in his life. After 12 years of torment, there are still post traumatic mental and physical scars that he is dealing with which requires medication. His 70 year old mother walks over 3 hours there and back to receive it. It costs 10,000 Nepal rupees a month for this medication (about $100) and they are calling for prayer that the Lord would provide the means for this medication to continue to be provided. His family sells vegetables and animals from their farm to pay for it as of now, but they don’t know if that will be sustainable for much longer due to his mothers old age.

Please be in prayer for this family. It’s humbling to see the scars on his hands and feet where he was chained for so many years.. It crushes any doubt of the dark spiritual warfare that goes on in these villages where people worship false gods and idols. Jesus is moving through the Himalayan mountains and bringing light into the darkest situations. I’m AMAZED to get to experience all that God is doing and HUMBLED that he would invite me to work along side him to bring life to these people. If you’ve never read Luke 8, I pasted it below. I never imaged meeting a living breathing version of this man from this story.. you can feel the hurt he’s experienced and there’s a solemness about him that is an acknowledgment to the trials he’s been through. Praise the Lord for his mercy and love..

“Then they sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness. Jesus asked him, saying, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered him. And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss. Now a herd of many swine was feeding there on the mountain. So they begged Him that He would permit them to enter them. And He permitted them. Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the lake and drowned. When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. Then they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. They also who had seen it told them by what means he who had been demon-possessed was healed. Then the whole multitude of the surrounding region of the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. And He got into the boat and returned. Now the man from whom the demons had departed begged Him that he might be with Him. But Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.” Luke 8:26-39
