This month we are in a closed country again and so ministry has looked a bit different. For most part we are teaching English and praying for the people here. I have never been to a city so big and busy with lots of lights, clubs, and bars. But here I am living in the middle of party central. The street we live on is a popular tourist area and locals often come for the night life as well. Extremely loud music, drugs, lots of people, bars, clubs, prostitutes, dancing, and alcohol has never been my jam but I’ve gotten less uncomfortable with the environment and more able to understand it.
Este mes estamos de nuevo en un país cerrado y el ministerio se ha visto un poco diferente. En la mayoría de los casos, estamos enseñando inglés y rezando por la gente aquí. Nunca he estado en una ciudad tan grande y concurrida con muchas luces, clubes y bares. Pero aquí estoy viviendo en el medio de la fiesta central. La calle en la que vivimos es una zona turística popular y los lugareños a menudo vienen a la vida nocturna también. La música extremadamente alta, drogas, mucha gente, bares, clubes, prostitutas, baile y alcohol nunca ha sido mi problema, pero me he sentido menos incómodo con el medio ambiente y más capaz de entenderlo.
Walking through a street completely packed with people looking forward to this night activity is a bit of an eye-opener with just how many people are looking to fill a void. So many looking to forget their daily life by drinking or taking drugs. Trying to impress others in hopes of finding affirmation and a sense of love. And this is only 1 street of many in the world where this is the norm. But 1 street is still important and so we’ve walked up and down it on it’s busiest night, Saturday to pray for everyone on it.
Caminar por una calle completamente atestada de gente que espera con ansias esta actividad nocturna es algo que abre los ojos con cuánta gente está buscando llenar un vacío. Muchos buscan olvidar su vida cotidiana bebiendo o tomando drogas. Tratando de impresionar a los demás con la esperanza de encontrar afirmación y un sentido de amor. Y esta es solo una calle de muchas en el mundo donde esta es la norma. Pero 1 calle sigue siendo importante, así que caminamos arriba y abajo en la noche más concurrida, el sábado, para orar por todos los que están allí.
I know not everyone who reads these blogs is a follower of Jesus and may think prayer is weird, so let me break it down for you. Praying is simply talking to God. Yup, that’s it. Nothing fancy, elaborate, or something you can do wrong. As someone who follows Jesus, I look to his example of how to pray. He prayed for his followers (John 17: 9-23), his enemies (Luke 23:34), to prevent harmful things (Matthew 6:13), to praise and thank God (Psalm 27), and to ask him for things (Luke 11:1-11). He’s my father and my friend and just like I talk to the important people in my life to maintain the relationship, I talk to God. So as we pray for others, we are just asking God to step into their lives so they can experience His love, safety, and true affirmation. That’s all I have for now, enjoy the pics! 😀
Sé que no todos los que leen estos blogs son seguidores de Jesús y pueden pensar que la oración es rara, así que déjame desglosarla por ti. Orar es simplemente hablar con Dios. SIP eso es. Nada sofisticado, elaborado o algo que puedas hacer mal. Como alguien que sigue a Jesús, miro su ejemplo de cómo orar. Él oró por sus seguidores (Juan 17: 9-23), sus enemigos (Lucas 23:34), para evitar cosas dañinas (Mateo 6:13), para alabar y agradecer a Dios (Salmo 27), y para pedirle cosas (Lucas 11: 1-11). Él es mi padre y mi amigo, y al igual que hablo con las personas importantes de mi vida para mantener la relación, hablo con Dios. Así que mientras oramos por los demás, solo le pedimos a Dios que intervenga en sus vidas para que puedan experimentar su amor, seguridad y verdadera afirmación.
