I started to have tooth pain again, shocking? No. I have had a ton of tooth problems over the last 10 years, I’ve had an appliance to move my top jaw, braces with rubber-bands, power-chains and all, 2 expanders (one of which cut my tongue open), spacers, retainers, all wisdom teeth removed, 2 implants, gum tissue lazered off, 2 root canals, and countless cavities, probably 100 at this point. Also I only have 4 teeth that touch, 2 on each side in the far back, and the tooth hurting was one of those.
Last Saturday night I woke up about 3 am to horrible pain in my teeth. It was so bad I was crying and shaking for about an hour and a half, unable to stop the pain with pain medicine. The pain lowered to a small ache and I slept for about 30 minutes and then the pain came back for at least another hour. It was awful. The next day we were traveling to our next ministry in Quito, Ecuador and I was in less pain but my tooth was still constantly aching all day and continued into the next.
Tenía dolor de dientes otra vez, soprendido? No. He tenido muchas problemas dentales en los pasados 10 años, he tenido un aparato para mover mi mandíbula superior, llaves con cadenas de poder de goma y todo, 2 expansores (uno de los cuales me cortó la lengua), espaciadores , retenedores, todos los dientes de la sabiduría quitados, 2 implantes, tejido de la goma láser apagado, 2 canales de la raíz, y cavidades incontables, probablemente 100 en este punto. También sólo tengo 4 dientes que tocan, 2 en cada lado en la parte posterior, y el diente que tiene dolor es uno de esos.
La última noche del sábado me desperté a las 3 de la mañana a dolor horrible en mis dientes. Persistió tan mal que lloraba y temblaba durante una hora y media, incapaz de detener el dolor con medicamentos para el dolor. El dolor se redujo a un pequeño dolor y dormí durante unos 30 minutos y luego el dolor regresó por lo menos otra hora. Fue horrible. Al día siguiente estábamos viajando a nuestro próximo ministerio en Quito Ecuador y yo estaba menos dolor, pero sigue siendo un dolor constante todo el día, y también en lunes.
Monday I went to the dentist to get x-rays and see what they suggested. They said that my only option was to remove my tooth. Fun stuff right? Anyway my squad and I prayed for the pain to go away and then I only had a little pain Tuesday morning that was easily controlled with a pill. I went all Wednesday without pain. I had been excited to see God perform miracles this year and I think this was Him just starting to show me what He can do by taking away my pain. I had my third root canal Friday and I don’t have any more pain. The last few days were the first days in Ecuador that I have finally been healthy and feeling well since I had a cold for our first week.
Also, on my way to and from the dentist I had pretty neat conversations with my uber drivers. The first was Pascual and the second was Angel. I got to share about what my group was doing for the World Race and we also prayed with Angel. He is a Christian himself and has been seeking wisdom from God and really wants to do what God is asking of him. He’s just having a little difficulty figuring out exactly what that looks like in his life. It was really neat to talk to him and he also said that we were an answer to his prayers which was awesome.
En lunes fui al dentista a buscar radiografías y ver lo que me sugirieron. Dijeron que mi única opción era quitarme el diente, cosas divertidas. De todos modos mi escuadrón y yo hemos estado rezando para que el dolor desaparezca y ya que sólo he tenido un poco de dolor el martes por la mañana y luego tomé una píldora. Fui todo de miércoles sin dolor. He estado muy emocionado de ver a Dios hacer milagros este año y creo que este es el que acaba de comenzar a mostrarme lo que puede hacer al quitar mi dolor. Tuve mi tercer canal de raíz en viernes y no tengo más dolor. Los últimos días fueron los primeros días en Ecuador que finalmente he estado sano y me siento bien ya que tenía un resfrío para nuestra primera semana.
También en mi camino hacia y desde el dentista tuve conversaciones bastante aseado con mis conductores de uber. El primero fue Pascual y el segundo fue Ángel. Tengo que compartir acerca de lo que mi grupo estaba haciendo por la World Race y también oramos con Angel. Él es un cristiano también y ha estado buscando la sabiduría de Dios y realmente quiere hacer lo que Dios le está pidiendo. Sólo tiene un poco de dificultad para averiguar exactamente cómo se ve en su vida. Era realmente ordenado hablar con él y él también dijo que éramos una respuesta a sus oraciones que era impresionante.
Our second ministry!
We are in Quito, Ecuador with our whole squad family: all 19 of us and our 2 squad leaders. So far, it has been exciting to be living with each other. Our host is an organization called IncaLink and an amazing couple, Fabi and Mabe are taking care of us and cooking all of our meals for us, which are amazing by the way. We are staying in a large house complete with bunk beds, a yard, and a few dogs so it really feels like home.
From what I can tell, this organization is more of a connection to other organizations. They also provide a home for pregnant teens and have an program for orphans, many of whom have disabilities. All 3 teams are going to different parts of the city to help with different ministries. One team is working with the school for kids with disabilities, another is working with kids who live on the streets, and my team is helping teach English at a private Christian school. Estamos en Quito, Ecuador con toda nuestra familia del viaje mision! Todos los 19 de nosotros y nuestros líderes de 2 líderes. Este mes hasta ahora ha sido emocionante estar viviendo uno con el otro. Nuestro anfitrión es una organización llamada IncaLink y una pareja increíble, Fabi y Mabe están cuidando de nosotros y cocinar todas nuestras comidas para nosotros, que son increíbles por cierto. Estamos alojados en una casa grande con literas, un patio, y unos cuantos perros así que realmente se siente como en casa.
Por lo que puedo decir, esta organización es una conexión a otras organizaciones. También proporcionan un hogar para adolescentes embarazadas y tienen un programa para los huérfanos, muchos de los cuales tienen discapacidades. Los 3 equipos van a diferentes partes de la ciudad para ayudar con diferentes ministerios. Un equipo está trabajando con la escuela para niños con discapacidades, otro está trabajando con niños que viven en las calles, y mi equipo está ayudando a enseñar inglés en una escuela cristiana privada. I’ve been teaching kids for years at church with Mission Arlington and although it looks very different here, I still really enjoy it. I realized last month that I loved teaching English to kids and now I have a similar role at the school. I am with high schoolers each day teaching them advanced English and participating in conversational classes. So far, we have talked about living long healthy lives and sharing our opinions for why people in biblical times lived for hundreds of years and we don’t.
It’s challenging to be doing ministry in a different way that doesn’t serve people with basic physical needs. However, I’m still excited to share more with them about why I believe what I believe and how God has changed my life. I have also noticed this month that some of my most exciting conversations have been with random people on my days off. With both of my uber drivers for example, and also a woman named Maria I met walking around downtown Quito this weekend. My squadmate Madison wrote more about our encounter with her, here.
He estado enseñando a niños durante años en la iglesia con Mission Arlington y aunque parezca muy diferente aquí todavía me gusta mucho. Me di cuenta el mes pasado que me encantó enseñar inglés a los niños y ahora tengo un papel similar en la escuela. Estoy con estudiantes de secundaria cada día enseñándoles inglés avanzado y participando en clases de conversación. Hasta ahora hemos hablado de vivir vidas largas y saludables y compartir nuestras opiniones de por qué la gente en los primeros tiempos de la Biblia vivió durante cientos de años y no lo hacemos.
Es un desafío estar haciendo el ministerio de una manera diferente que no sirve a las personas con necesidades físicas básicas. Sin embargo, todavía estoy emocionado de compartir más con ellos sobre por qué creo lo que creo y cómo Dios ha cambiado mi vida. También he notado este mes que algunas de mis conversaciones más emocionantes han sido con gente aleatoria en mis días de descanso. Con tanto de mis conductores uber por ejemplo, y también una mujer llamada María me reuní caminando por el centro de Quito este fin de semana. Basically, she just had a baby 6 months ago and was deported from the United States. Needless to say, it has been very hard for her to be forced to come back to Ecuador after living in the US for 20 years. She doesn’t know many people here in Quito and is living in a homeless shelter and working a small job until she finishes all of her paperwork to go back to live with her mom and son in California. Please join me in prayer for this to be a speedy process and for God to place more people in our path on our days off as well!
Básicamente ella acaba de tener un bebé 6 meses hace y fue deportado de los Estados Unidos. Así que ha sido muy difícil para ella ser forzada a regresar a Ecuador después de vivir en los EE.UU. durante 20 años. Ella no conoce a mucha gente aquí en Quito y está viviendo en un refugio para personas sin hogar y trabajando un pequeño trabajo hasta que ella termina todo su papeleo para volver a vivir con su mamá y su hijo en California. Por favor, únase a mí en la oración para que este sea un proceso rápido y para que Dios poner más personas en nuestro camino en nuestros días de descanso también!
