The time is here, we are in our first month in Asia. For most of you that know me Latin America has always had my heart and Asia never really has. I don’t know how to say hello in any Asian countries, it’s hotter over here, and the culture is very different. The majority of our route is in Asia and so taking this trip will be a step of faith for me during these next few months.Luckily, it’s been a smooth transition for me so far. The language isn’t too difficult to learn, it’s not too hot, and the people at our ministry are lots of fun.
Ha llegado el momento, estamos en nuestro primer mes en Asia. Para la mayoría de ustedes que me conocen América Latina siempre ha tenido mi corazón y Asia nunca tuvo realmente. No sé cómo decir hola en ningún país asiático, hace más calor aquí y la cultura es muy diferente. La mayoría de nuestra ruta se encuentra en Asia, por lo que tomar este viaje será un paso de fe para mí durante estos próximos meses. Afortunadamente, ha sido una transición sin problemas para mí hasta ahora. El lenguaje no es demasiado difícil de aprender, no hace demasiado calor, y la gente de nuestro ministerio es muy divertida.
This month we are going to be helping in a few ways here including prison ministry, teaching english, and building relationships with women who were formerly in the sex trafficking industry as well as spending time with their kids. With these specific ministries I likely will not be able to post lots of pictures or even tell many stories about the people we meet. We are also in a closed country and our ministry asked us not to post where we are anywhere online because it puts the ministry at risk.
Este mes vamos a ayudar de varias maneras aquí, incluyendo el ministerio de la prisión, la enseñanza de inglés y la construcción de relaciones con mujeres que anteriormente estaban en la industria del tráfico sexual, así como también pasar tiempo con sus hijos. Con estos ministerios específicos, probablemente no pueda publicar muchas fotos o incluso contar muchas historias sobre las personas que conocemos. También estamos en un país cerrado y nuestro ministerio nos pidió que no publiquemos dónde estamos en línea porque pone en riesgo al ministerio.
Our third day here we went out prayer walking with one of our hosts. While we were out walking our squiggly roads on the map, half of us got caught by a monsoon of rain. We knew it was going to rain every day but I don’t think any of us realized how bad it would be. When I say we were drenched, we were drenched. Our raincoats and my umbrella were no match for the downpour and the rivers in the street were at least passed our ankles. For Kirsten and I it was like walking through a pool with shoes on since we didn’t wear sandals.
Nuestro tercer día aquí salimos a caminar con uno de nuestros anfitriones. Mientras estábamos caminando por nuestras onduladas carreteras en el mapa, la mitad de nosotros quedamos atrapados por un monzón de lluvia. Sabíamos que iba a llover todos los días, pero no creo que ninguno de nosotros se diera cuenta de lo malo que sería. Cuando digo que estábamos empapados, estábamos empapados. Nuestros impermeables y mi paraguas no podían competir con el aguacero y los ríos en la calle al menos pasaron por nuestros tobillos. Para Kirsten y para mí fue como caminar por una piscina con los zapatos puestos ya que no usamos sandalias.
The street names weren’t matching up with our map, we don’t know any of the language, our map got unreadable with the rain and we didn’t know how to get back to a bank, our meeting point. So of course we prayed for someone nearby that knew English or could guide us to the meeting point. God provided someone even better, a man who knew English and walked out in the pouring rain with no rain jacket to walk us directly to the bank about 15 minutes away! He’s probably more used to the rain but still, the people here are very selfless and kind.
Los nombres de las calles no coincidían con nuestro mapa, no conocemos el idioma, nuestro mapa no se podía leer con la lluvia y no sabíamos cómo regresar a un banco, nuestro punto de encuentro. Entonces, por supuesto, oramos por alguien cercano que sepa inglés o pueda guiarnos al punto de encuentro. Dios le proporcionó a alguien aún mejor, un hombre que sabía inglés y se fue en la lluvia torrencial sin chaqueta de lluvia para llevarnos directamente al banco, ¡a unos 15 minutos de distancia! Probablemente esté más acostumbrado a la lluvia, pero aún así, la gente aquí es muy desinteresada y amable.
We’ve already made lots of friends and had awesome conversations with some, but keep praying for more!
