It’s only day 3 and my Spanish has come back even stronger yay!! I have really been enjoying my time here with the absolutely perfect spring weather and the beautiful mountains! And of course the people here at our ministry host.
Mi español ha vuelto fuerte! El clima aquí es perfecto y hermoso, especialmente las montañas. Y claro, el ministerio y sus personas. Hemos estado trabajando con un ministerio que realmente sabe cómo dar un salto de fe y confianza en Dios. Se llama Ciudad Refugio en Medellín, Colombia.
We have been working with a ministry that really knows how to take a leap of faith and trust in God. It’s called Ciudad Refugio and they are based in Medellin, Colombia (pronounced med-a-jin). We are staying in the 5 1/2 story building which was designed and planned to take care of multiple needs. The first floor is open to the homeless at night as long as they don’t have any weapon and show up sober. They keep a list of who comes and if they stay for more than a week they are required to come to at least one church service a week in order to continue to spend the night here. On Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays this same floor is where we go to have church all together.
En el edificio del ministerio, el primer piso está abierto a aquellos sin casas por la noche sólo si no tienen ninguna arma y están sobrios. Hay una lista de quiénes vienen y si permanecen por más de una semana se les requiere que vayan al menos a un servicio de iglesia una semana para continuar pasando la noche aquí.
Ciudad Refugio’s main program is for people who sincerely want to get off the streets and learn to live a life away from crime and drugs. The second floor is where the men in the program stay for 12-18 months as they go through this process. They are required to go to the church and discipleship services throughout the week, and work in the ministry’s bakery, kitchen or fix any maintenance problems in the building. The women in the program stay on the 3rd floor and are required to do the same things. This ministry requires this of them so that they can learn life skills, be able to hold a job afterwards, and so they ministry is self-sufficient and does not need to pay employees since the employees are participants in the program.
El programa principal de Ciudad Refugio es para personas que sinceramente quieren salir de las calles y aprender a vivir una vida lejos del crimen y las drogas. En un programa de 12-18 meses, esta iglesia requiere que ayuden a cocinar, limpiar y mantener el edificio. Para que puedan aprender habilidades para la vida, ser capaces de tener un trabajo después, y por lo que el ministerio es autosuficiente.
My team is staying on the 3rd floor along with a volunteer from Israel, Lily, and 2 girls from Germany, Celia & Lydia, who are volunteering here for a whole year through a German government program. On the 4th floor there is a kitchen and classrooms. On the 5th floor there are a few apartments for full time missionaries who help keep the ministry going.
Mi grupo está viviendo en el mismo piso con una voluntaria de Israel, Lily, y 2 chicas de Alemania, Celia & Lydia, que se ofrecen voluntariamente aquí durante un año a través de un programa del gobierno alemán.
I’m not sure of everything Ciudad Refugio does, but they are awesome. Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming it’s been a lot of fun to help the women in the kitchen preparing and cooking food for hours the last couple of days. We have befriended these lovely women here either in the program, a volunteer, or someone who has been through the program: Claudia, Dona Nena, Romana, Maylissa, Michele, Paola, Alejandra, Marta, Isella, Albaluz, Evelyn, Flor, Rebekah, Sofia, and Margaret. They are lots of fun to cook with and learn from. I can’t wait to know more about each of their stories!
No estoy seguro de todo lo que Ciudad Refugio hace, pero son impresionantes. Todo el mundo ha sido tan amable, ha sido muy divertido ayudar a las mujeres en la cocina preparando y cocinando comida durante horas en el último par de días. Hemos hecho amistad con estas mujeres encantadoras aquí en el programa, un voluntario o alguien que ha pasado por el programa: Claudia, Dona Nena, Romana, Maylissa, Michele, Paola, Alejandra, Marta, Isella, Albaluz, Evelyn, Flor, Rebekah , Sofía y Margaret. Son mucho de divertido y No puedo esperar para saber más sobre cada una de sus historias!

I can also see the faithfulness of this church going out into the dark parts of town at night that they describe as the Devil’s playground, and they aren’t exaggerating. On Wednesday nights they pass out a hot sugar water drink and some bread in these areas. We will be joining them each Wednesday as they do this so we got to experience it for the first time yesterday. We pray before we go, when we arrive and with the people we meet there. It was unreal how many people are living a life trying to escape the pain of this world, are stuck in addiction, abuse, or whatever the case may be. We drove passed hundreds of people in just a few blocks that live on the street and are continuously under the influence of some substance. Many not wearing all their clothes, some malnourished, some doing things that should be done in private, etc. Instead of helping pass out the drink and bread, I decided to go with a few of the women to meet with a few kids they have been visiting each Wednesday night. They were so full of life in the midst of a really dark place. We talked to them a little, read a story in the bible, got to receive sweet joy-filled hugs from the 3 young girls (Michele, Joanna, Viela) and then had to head back.
También puedo ver la fidelidad de esta iglesia saliendo a las partes oscuras de la ciudad por la noche que describen como el lugar de juego del diablo, y no están exagerando. Los miércoles por la noche pasan un azúcar aqua caliente y un poco de pan en estas áreas. Estaremos con ellos cada miércoles, así que lo experimentamos por primera vez ayer. Oramos antes de vamos, cuando llegamos y con la gente que nos encontramos allí. Era irreal cuántas personas están viviendo una vida tratando de escapar del dolor de este mundo, están atrapados en la adicción, el abuso, o lo que sea el caso puede ser. Condujimos cientos de personas pasadas en sólo unas pocas cuadras que viven en la calle y están continuamente bajo la influencia de alguna sustancia. Muchos no llevan toda su ropa, algunos desnutridos, otros hacen cosas que deben hacerse en privado, y más. Decidí no dejar pasar el pan y el agua y fui con unas cuantas de las mujeres a reunirme con unos cuantos niños que han estado visitando cada miércoles por la noche. Estaban llenos de vida en medio de un lugar realmente oscuro. Hablamos con ellos un poco, leímos una historia en la Biblia, recibimos dulces abrazos llenos de alegría de las 3 chicas jóvenes (Michele, Joanna, Viela) y luego tuvimos que regresar.
This Saturday we will be helping the church with 2 children’s programs. Today I was teaching English to a handful of kids which was lots of fun, so I’m excited to meet more tomorrow! From what I’ve been told we will be feeding them, playing with them, and reading the bible with them. Este sábado estaremos ayudando a la iglesia con dos programas para niños. Hoy estaba enseñando inglés a un puñado de niños que fue muy divertido, así que estoy emocionado de conocer más mañana! Creo que los estaremos alimentando, jugando con ellos y leyendo la Biblia con ellos. Some ways you could be praying is for my team to grow closer together as we get to know each other, for God to reach out to those who are overdosing hoping to end their lives and to show them love and hope through Ciudad Refugio, and for safety as foreigners here, especially as we go into the dark parts of the city on Wednesday nights. I don’t have my regular computer to make a video collage like I normally do but I’ll try to post a video sometime next week so you can see more of what our life here looks like for this month. We are definitely spoiled, but we are loving it here!
Algunas maneras en las que podrías estar orando es para mi grupo crecer más cerca juntos, para que Dios hable con los que están sobredosis esperando terminar sus vidas y mostrarles amor y esperanza a través de Ciudad Refugio, y por seguridad como extranjeros aquí, especialmente el miércoles Noches. Just a note: Instead of going to Latvia, our last month we are now going to Spain and at the end of the month hiking some of El Camino!
