Yesterday was our first church experience in Africa and on the race!
Yes, it was awesome! We met up with another team that is serving in Lusaka. It was great to briefly catch up with them and learn about how their ministry is going. There team has been doing street evangelism and college ministry. And because of that they brought with them a couple students from campus to church for the first time!
Come to find out their host family attends this church and the other team was scheduled to sing part of worship. Since our team was present too….we naturally had to jump in. Nothing like finding out 15 minutes before service starts what song you are going to sing in front of the congregation of about 40-50 people. We sang How He Loves Us by Jesus Culture.
For me, that experience rocked my world. There is this small part of me that thinks that I can sing and this opportunity to help lead a worship song was just what I needed to push me out of my comfort zone. Out of the 11 of us singing somehow I managed to be on the front line…not sure how that works out since I am one of the tallest but that is how it played out. Inside of me I was a tad nervous about getting the lines messed up. I know I have sang that song hundreds of times in my head or along with a worship band. Now being apart of making the song happen to an audience who have never heard it before changes everything.
While singing it though I could feel God ministering to me through that song. As you sing about how much God loves us, about His over abundance of grace and mercy. We are just sinking in an ocean of His presence, submissive like a tree in a hurricane, and my heart a pounding realizing how great He truly is! That all my regrets, shame, and sin doesn’t even come close to how much He loves us!
Embrace an uncomfortable situation and just sing that song to yourself over and over again. Come to completely understanding everyday how much God loves us and is trying to draw you near to Him! He is ever faithful, and will be there when you take that next step of faith.
