I have been in Honduras for a month now, and I love it. My team and I are in the mountains of Honduras outside the small town of Ojojona. We are living at a ranch called Rancho Oasis for Youth or RO4Y. Our hosts, the Beard family have taken us in and made us feel like family.
Honduras and Cambodia have been completely different experiences so far. Surprisingly in Cambodia there were more English speakers. Unless you go to the capitol of Honduras there’s a small chance you’re going to find English speakers in Ojojona. The biggest difference between the two has been the ministry we have done. In Cambodia we taught English, and here in Honduras, our ministry has been our hosts and each other.
It’s a time of transition here at RO4Y. School ended a couple days after we got here and the Beard family is leaving to visits family for a couple weeks soon. I’m not complaining about the lack of interaction with locals or lack of ministry. Because there has been no lack of either.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays a group of Honduran boys of all ages come to soccer practice. Last week my team had the opportunity to get to join in a scrimmage with them. The ranch has two ranch hands Oscar and Machi. None of the boys or the ranch hands know English, but that doesn’t stop us from trying to talk to them. (It’s caused some pretty confused conversations) We are getting to show them Gods love for them by serving them while working in the field and playing soccer alongside them.
Our ministry this month has been working in a field from 9-12:30 pulling up weeds and running an after school program for the 5 Beard kids. We have been doing all sorts of things with the kids and have been getting to love on them. The family as a whole has been our ministry and it’s been a lot of fun. We get to take the kids for an afternoon and let their parents finish stuff they need to do. It’s also been a great experience seeing how a family of seven lives a mission filled life.
I think the biggest ministry this month has been our team pouring into each other. In Cambodia my team worked along side another team and we lived with our whole squad. Here at RO4Y it’s just my team. We have grown really close this month and every meal ends in us sitting around the table laughing our heads off. There is no one to turn to besides our team so we have turned to each other.
Please send prayers for health and funding our way. As well as pray for the country of Honduras as the go through this time of craziness.
If you are feeling called to donate or just want to please consider donating to one of my teammates who are still on the journey of fundraising. Any amount would help tremendously.
