Three days a week we teach at a school where students come trickling in, with broken homes, behavior problems, abandonment issues, and poverty. These beautiful souls, 8th through 12th grade, were either kicked out of their original school or dropped out because their parents couldn’t afford it. This small school was created by a single women, to be a welcoming place for students to come and to continue their education with a very small cost. Because of the small cost required, all the teachers voluntarily come everyday and pour into these hungry students. My team and I come and teach 3 days a week and get the opportunity to be a light for these students.

While Madi and Laura teach math or science, Amanda and Zahli and I teach life skills. On the first day, I opened up the class with a simple question, I asked “what do you want to be when you grow up”? Very eagerly each of them threw their hands in the air, taking turns standing in front of all the giggling mouths and staring eyes, sharing their dreams. I wasn’t aware that I was in a room amongst such big dreamers; doctors, pilots, teachers, pastors, explorers, scientists, dentists, broadcasters and so much more. These so called “misfits” are not misfits at all, they are dreamers, such big dreamers! Not only are they just dreamers, they are dreamers with determination. My mind can’t seem to wrap around the thought of these students having almost nothing and been through so much, yet they resist giving up on such big dreams and aspirations for their lives. With each of these ambitious dreams of theirs, they’re learning to trust the Lord with their next steps to become the doctor or pilot they strive to be. There is nothing better than encouraging young dreamers to never stop pursuing their dreams whole heartedly. Their brains soak up every single drop of words we speak over them. Our students are learning that the Lord not only gave them these passions and dreams, but also that they can glorify Him through it all. Each of their hearts are becoming open for the Lord to flood in and it’s truly incredible to experience and be apart of. The ambition of these young people is almost tangible.
