Growing up, every Christmas Eve my church would give each family a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts and challenge us to give them away.

As a kid this was really exciting… we got to decide who needed or wanted the donuts more than us and we saw their faces light up as we gave them the treats.

However every year when we received the donuts, there was a part of me that wanted to keep the donuts for ourselves. I would think, “Would it really be THAT BAD if we didn’t give the donuts away and just kept them to eat ourselves?” I mean who would really know?

Even as a kid I knew the purpose of giving away the donuts wasn’t just to do a random act of kindness on Christmas. It was to show love and thankfulness to those around us; we (in a very simple way) were mimicking Christ by giving away what was given to us.

But how often do we ask ourselves that same exact question that I asked as a girl? “would it really be THAT BAD if we didn’t give the donuts away?” Okay so it’s probably not that exact question..

But maybe it sounds a little like this

“Would it really be that bad if I didn’t give up my Saturday morning to go volunteer and just sleep in?”

“Would it be awful if I didn’t give up Netflix for quiet time?”

“What if I just keep scrolling on Facebook and act like I don’t notice the lady who obviously needs help with her bags? Would it be that bad?!”

We live in a society where were taught to focus on ourselves; what can we gain and how can we please ourselves.

So the answer to whether or not it would be THAT BAD if we just kept the donuts is no.

The world won’t end if you sleep in on Saturday morning instead of volunteering just like it wouldn’t have if we had eaten all dozen donuts.

But you see, we serve a self-less God who gave everything for us. So why can’t we give a little for the glory of His kingdom. We give our time, our talents, our energy and even our donuts for the God who gave it all. In hopes that someone will see Christ through us.

My greatest prayer is that the world can see a glimpse of my selfless God through me.

Merry Christmas Y’all!
