We’ve been in Medellin volunteering with Ciudad Refugio for about a week and a half now, and I am so amazed by how many different ways they serve here. Each day is something different – one day you could be walking down a street crowded with drug addicts offering bread and sugar water, praying over them and looking for people to join the program, and then the next morning you’re scraping poop out of shrimp in the kitchen. This organization has such a wide reach and it has given us wonderful opportunities to work with the women in the program, the children that come to hang out with us on Saturdays, and all of the other volunteers that serve alongside us.
My squad and I have also been enjoying the city! Each week we get a Sabbith day, and an adventure day. This last week we went hiking up a mountain, and if you thought walking up five flights of stairs to get to your room every day was tough before, my sore legs can barely make it now. In our free afternoons, we’ll walk down to the market or take the metro to the eight story mall or just explore. I can’t get over the view here. Everything is beautiful, and the view from our terrace definitely makes up for the five stories we climb to get to it.
I’m trying to learn Spanish! Definitely mourning the fact that I didn’t make time for it before coming here. Some of my teammates are able to hold conversations with the locals and it’s lovely. People are very friendly here, and I can’t wait for the day when I ask “¿cómo estás?” and actually understand their answer.
God is moving here in Medellin, among the people in the programs, the people we meet on prayer walks, and definitely within the squad. It is such a treat getting to live life beside these people, praying for them daily and celebrating God’s kingdom with them. Stick around for more updates and stories as we buckle down for two months here in Medellin!
