Let me tell you all about this place! It’s by far my favorite country, the people, the culture, the creativity I’m surrounded by and just overall everything.
-The people: everyone is SO open minded. So ready to hear whatever us crazy Americans have to say! They take everything we say and truly take it in and think deeply about it. Whether it be scripture, our testimonies, or just casual conversation. We’ve been able to make solid relationships with people we’ve just met a week ago. We’ve had the privilege of telling them all about Christ and all He did for us and in turn these people have asked us how they can be Christians!!!! Over 60 people in just 4 days have said they want to live a Christian life, and joined a local church or bible study!!
-The culture: the squatter camps are filled with people from all over Africa. We’ve met people from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Limpopo, Lesotho, Swaziland, Tanzania, Botswana, and so many more countries! With Joburg being the melting pot of people from all over Africa (coming for a hopeful job) there is SO MUCH CULTURE!!! Everyone speaks their mother countries language and brings their own cultures twist on hospitality. I’ve been welcomed into strangers homes and offered the seats they are sitting on and their full attention. This culture is one of the most hospitable ones I’ve ever been in.
-The creativity: the people here are oh so creative. They have so little and make it so much. From the tin walls they make into a home to the games the kids play for hours upon hours. The creativity is like none other. I’ve seen some real real beautiful houses in the middle of squatter camps that would normally be next to nothing but these people have created so much to bring happiness and beauty to their homes.
*squatter camps- a community of people from all over the continent who travel to a big city to find work. Most squatter camps have anywhere from 5,000 to 700,000 people living in each community
