Before setting a foot in India, I was told India is an experience that assaults all sense. Having lived within the Indian culture for a month, I can only affirm that warning.
-The stench lofting out of the largest slum in Asia felt like a kick in the face as we drove through Mumbai, and that was only an introduction to the many smells India has to offer.
-The musical tunes that substitute the typical American horns can be deafening as you cross the streets.
-At first I was a little taken aback when I saw dozens of people urinating along the side of the road or on sidewalks, but the sight became an expectation (let’s be real… sometimes out of sheer desperation an activity I had to participate in).
-As far as the sense of touch is concerned, my hands became my most utilized utensil.
-Saving the best for last, my mouth will never be the same after India. Not only have the majority of my taste buds been seared off from the spicy punch curry inflicts, but I had the pleasant experience of spending an evening puking in the bathroom after only spending two full days in India. (that happened to be December 31… nothing like starting off the new year with a bang.)
So yes, India is unlike any culture I’ve ever experienced. However, the uncomfortable qualities it has to offer to a westernized white girl, do not come close to dimming the sparkle that reflects from the gem this nation has become in my heart.
My team and I spent our month working with an organization based in Chennai. Living at an all girls orphanage, my days began and ended with the sweet smiles beaming from little girls who referred to me as Anah (older sister). Our blessing to the girls was sanding and painting their dining hall. I inhaled so much paint dust at the end of multiple days that my snot matched the wall color.
My team and I spend many, many hours on a bus traveling to villages to preach, distribute rice, and share the Jesus film. Each day in India was unique and full of surprises. I’ve written this multiple times, but I find myself in the same place of deep thankfulness to be on this journey. God is so good and continues to move my heart for the nations.
As of now, I am in need of $2,861.83 for our March 1st deadline. Any amount of support is greatly needed and appreciated. Thank you so much for following and supporting what God is doing around the world!
