As most of you know I left home about a week ago to head down to Atlanta for launch. I arrived at the hotel, which was filled with about 300 racers and was reunited with me squad mates. We had more training and sessions over those few days before we departed for Guatemala. On the 8th we spent the entire day in the airport before boarding our plane around sunset. We arrived at the airport in Guatemala City and then took a bus to where we are staying in San Pedro.
We are staying in a house in San Pedro which is about a 10min chicken bus ride into Antigua.
On our first morning my squad mates Miriam and Joey and I went for a walk around our neighborhood and into town for the first time. Our neighborhood sits under a volcano so we have an amazing view.
On our walk through our neighborhood Miriam and I walked past this mother and daughter who were walking down to the bus stop. We said hello and good morning and kept on going and once we were just past them we heard the mother explaining to the girl what a gringo was because shed never seen a white person before. As we kept walking we heard the mother and little girl singing “ gringaa, grinngaaa”
We walked into town and got our first taste of local life. The smell of fresh tortillas being made filled the street and everyone smiled and stared at us. We got coca colas surprisingly not in a bag but shortly after the coke truck came by to collect all the empty bottles.
Later that day my team and I walked into town and to the square where we went into this beautiful church and got some fresh fruit.
We have also been teaching in schools. We went to a school just outside of Antigua to help teach an English class. We were broken into pairs and got a few students and began asking them questions and helping them with their English. Me and my Team mate Ross were partners and we were working with three 14 year old boys. Ross also makes super awesome video blogs and yall should check them out.Overall I love it here and the first few days have been great. Thanks again to everyone who has supported me along this journey because I wouldn’t be here without you!
