Why NOT the World Race?

I come from the largest generation in the world. Generation Y consists of over half the world’s population being 25 and under. I heard in a sermon a couple years ago that our generation is the most cause-oriented, but also the most egocentric. Most people my age care about the future, we want to make a difference in the world, we want to go buy Toms Shoes, we accept prayer challenges to end poverty through the Micah Challenge, we go to church and read our bibles, and we want to help others…The problem is that we get caught up in our daily lives and forget about the bigger picture.

Another part of our generation is that we are so connected, but so isolated. 5 billion people are estimated to have cell phones, out of the 6.8 billion people in the world. But at the same time social skills, patience and conflict resolution are at an all time low.  It warns us in the bible not to let this happen: in Ecclesiastes 4:12 it says by yourself, you are unprotected, with a friend you can face the worst. God wants us to make meaningful relationships with one another.

I left God on the back burner for too long, I was trying to live my life by using my own plans but He finally got me to wake up and realize that my life isn’t about my next chemistry test or my boyfriend or what to wear to the party this weekend. It’s about helping others and showing them God’s love. The world can be changed; I will no longer listen to the people who say that one person can’tmake a difference. I can make a difference in the bigger picture if I just step up and do it. So I choose to follow my calling and go on the World Race, which is God’s plan for me. I’m tired of being self-consumed and I’m ready for whatever changes in my life will take place. God is asking me to put down my cell phone, twitter and facebook, and go face-to-face with complete strangers. I will no longer be consumed with being connected to everyone at once, but to make the meaningful relationships that He wants for me. I am going to be a part of a change in the world, and it will be amazing.
