Last month in Peru and this month in Nicaragua we have visited the local city dumps. The vast majority of people who live in these cities never think about these places, let alone set foot in them. They are desolate landfills full of burning trash whose stench is carried on the hot wind and smoke. The people who live there make their living by searching through the mounds of refuse to find enough plastic bottles to sell so they can get by. There is no promotion system or potential for upward mobility. Life is the same, day in and day out, and hope is scarce. We tried to offer them some by bringing food and toys, and more than that by bringing truth and love. This is an awesome video that my teammate Joel Dutton made that brilliantly explains the situation, so I thought I would repost it. Enjoy!
