Bible Lessons

F E A R

I stood before fifty smiling children who were eager to take a break from their lessons and find out what we were going to share from the Bible that day. I had spent time in preparation and I was ready to share with them, “Today we are going to talk about fear.” (Wait for the translation) “Is anyone here afraid of something?” A unanimous “NOOO” broke out across the room.

Well there goes my lesson I might as well close my Bible and journal and go home, I thought silently. After some probing I found that the majority of kids in that room DO have a fear of snakes, especially because there are a lot of poisonous snakes in that region of Honduras. And despite their lack of fear most of them were unable to successful do a trust fall.

The children that we visited in Honduras through Hope at Hand this month were some of the most graceful and forgiving children I have ever met. Even though they weren’t willing to fess up to fear at the beginning they continued to take in the rest of the lesson, and I must say they performed the most adorable skit of “Peter Walking on Water” that I have ever seen.

Maybe there is a reason that the kids shouted that they had no fear, perhaps they trust God. As I blog I try to think on the lessons that God wants to teach me in life, through the simple things. I received a text from a friend, “I always feel that I am supposed to do something for Him, but at the same time I’m not sure, so fearful”. I don’t think my friend is the only Christian with fears, I am almost certain that the majority of Christians face fears on a regular basis.

We know that fear doesn’t come from God, so where does it come from? Some things from my own life that have caused fear is expectations I have placed on myself, or that I believe others have places on me, fear of failure is a BIG area of insecurity. Something I think we need to continually consider is, based on whose standard are we afraid of failing?

Solomon in all of his glory was not arrayed like the lilies of the field.

Solomon who was the KING of Israel. Solomon who had all the worldly treasures we could imagine, the Lord even USED him to build the temple that housed the glory and presence of God. He was powerful and successful by our standards.

But Jesus has given us an opportunity to trust him beyond even that of Solomon. Not to worry about our physical circumstances. To trust the Lord to provide for our needs and to bless us even if some people shame us. It surly is easier said than done, but it starts with the small things. Because you are not going to wake up someday and have a massive amount of faith if you don’t take a small step of faith today. I also believe it starts with allowing the presence of God to minister to areas where you, others or the enemy has spoken lies over you. Seek God and ask Him to reveal the lies that you have believed and let him minister truth to you.

At the end of the day when someone asks me if I have any fears, I want my answer to be a resounding “NOOO”.
