Churches are great. They minister to people's souls, and let God work in their lives from the inside out. But I think people, in general can get super distracted by their needs in the here and now. I love coming across churches and ministries that help people in this moment. Help them through what their needs are now.
The Church we are working with this month, Gospel Center Ministries, is a church that is helping people in the here and now, as well as for eternity. Every morning we spend an hour doing devotions with their sewing class. The women and men in the class are people who are trying to get themselves out of poverty. They are people who are trying to make life better for themselves and for their family.
The class teaches them the basics of being a tailor, a job that is not out of date here. They are all over. The coolest part comes when the student graduates. The church finances their own sewing machine, which the student pays back as they can. In this world you always have to spend money to make money, but what about those people who have no money to spend. It's like being stuck in a hole that you just can't get out of. Gospel Center is getting people out of the hole, person by person and giving them a better life. I just think it's such a cool thing.
