Time is never something I took for granted. I've been busy my whole life. In high school, I was involved in things in three different cities, driving from school to lessons to dance class to choir practice to work. I never really had down time and college was more of the same. I took at least 20 hours every semester until I graduated. I had a go go go lifestyle.
And then I came on the race – and to Africa.
Here they have this thing we call "African Time" and the thing about it is, is that it never matches the time on my watch. We have breakfast at nine, which on my watch looks like 10:30. We leave for evangelism at noon, which is actually like 2:00 and we meet back at the church at 5:30, which looks more like 6:30 or even 7. It's a treat if we have dinner before 10!
At first this frustrated me to no end. I was ready when it was time to go, and I wanted to go! We still have a lot of confusion, just today we were having a meeting at 3. We had invited people to come, and then right at three, Mama Mary wanted to leave to invite more people to come! We were all worried about the people that we had already invited showing up to an empty church!
Through the confusion and frustration though, I've learned something. I'm learning to be patient, to go with the flow and to laugh at the stuff that used to make me angry. I'm even learning to like African time!! I'm still ready when my watch says to be ready, but I'm getting a lot of book read on my Kindle in the meantime!
p.s. Check out some of the awesome people and places I get to meet and see. I feel so nerdy saying this, but Kenya has some of the most beautiful clouds I've ever seen!
