Before I get started I would like to apologize for the lack of updates over the last few weeks. God has been putting me through the fire this month and apparently I put a higher priority on working through my sin than in blogging. Also the Lord had really provided for my team this month and has kept us busy meeting with his amazing people here in Malaysia. I am going to attempt to catch up on my blogging and tell the stories form the last two weeks. So without further delays; here it goes.
Malaysia
This nation is incredible. Before coming to Kuala Lumpur I had a vague idea about just how diverse this nation is, but all the pages online could not prepare me for the multicultural society I walked off the plane into. While there are many different people groups represented in Malaysia the three main cultures are those of the Chinese, Indian, and native Malay peoples. All of these people have maintained their unique practices and often do not form family units with those from other backgrounds even though they all attend school together. In the cities there are mosques, temples, shrines, and churches and every person on the street is willing to share what they believe. Unlike America where religion is almost a taboo topic, here it makes up the structure of many conversations.
So what happened when a group of seven white girls found themselves in a foreign nation with no ministry contact and a month full of days and possibilities? Well to start off they walked the wrong way when trying to find their hostel in Chinatown. We gave the locals quite the show walking through the middle of the capital with our huge packs, urban backpacking is really awkward. After our first night in the city we set off for the apartment in Subang Jaya, again trying to navigate the railways with huge packs on our backs made us quite the spectacle. If nothing else we gave the onlookers something to smile about.
We were so blessed to have a young woman named Kelsey take us under her wing. She has been in Malaysia for almost two years now and was able to impart on us some of her knowledge and pointed us to different churches and contacts in the city. After the first day of orientation and being shown around and introduced to the yummy food, we got down to work. Setting up meetings and praying that God would place his people in our path. We knew going in that he would provide for us but we were taken by surprise by just how much he did.
In my next blogs I will be telling the stories of the people we were blessed to meet which are a testament to how much the Lord is moving around the world.
