20 years ago this small country in the heart of Africa was tearing itself apart. Children were pitted against their friends. Husbands were against their wives. Brothers were against sisters. Neighbors were against one another. It was a massive genocide. Millions of people were viciously murdered and no one was safe. The most common weapon used was a machete, because it prolonged the suffering of the victim.
These beautiful smiling faces represent the healing that has come to this amazing little country with a huge heart. Rwanda suffered incredible loss during the genocide. However, there has been restoration, forgiveness, and healing that Rwanda has welcomed. There was forgiveness and grace extended to those who were involved in murders. From the ashes and hurt, Rwandans wanted to be sure that no event like this ever happened again. They did this by going through the healing process together because there was no longer a “side” to be on.
Of course, none of this happened overnight. People still wear scars from the genocide, but instead of getting revenge, they have allowed themselves to be healed of this tragedy. It is much like the healing that the Lord brings to each of us. It was a process, and it still continues today. But, what an incredible thing it was to experience the healing that has come to Rwanda. It is heartbreaking yet beautiful. And that’s what I could see in the smiles of these young girls. I could see the healing that has come to each of their lives. I could see the joy that healing brings to hurting people.
Joy. Healing brings Joy.
