” ‘Everyone will ask about it,’ he warned. ‘But most people really only want to hear about the weather and what you ate. More than that and their eyes will start to glaze over.’ ”

Thus, I present to you a food blog from Vietnam, because who doesn’t love a good food blog?

Ban Mee:

This is your basic sandwich on a baguette. The entirety of it’s ingredients is not currently known, but it includes a cheese spread (think Laughing Cow spreadable cheese), sliced pork, pork floss (the fuzzy looking stuff, it actually taste really good!), some herbs, cucumber, soy sauce (I think), and a slaw-like-vegetable. I probably ate one of these 5 nights out of 7. We would always go to this little lady at the corner of our hotel. To read more about her story, check out Celeste’s blog.

.
I’m not sure what the Vietnamese name for this is, but it is pork chop with rice. So good! I had this twice and loved it both times. Highly recommend it if you ever go to Vietnam.

Bun Thit Nuong

This is yet another dish with an inconclusive ingredient list. Basically it is noodles, some type of meat (I was informed that they do not eat dog with noodles,  that’s just weird…), cucumbers, beans sprouts, slaw-like-veggies, and peanut sauce. I had this a couple of times. It’s pretty good but they don’t serve it warm, just the peanut sauce is.

Banh Xeo: the Vietnamese pancake.
This is some sort of “pancake” that taste nothing like a pancake. It has meat and shrimp in it, and bean sprouts. You put it together yourself. You put the pancake on rice paper, add cucumber, more bean sprouts, wrap it, and then dip it in peanut sauce. Pretty good. Plus, I’m a big fan of anything you get to eat with peanut sauce!

Chicken Egg Bowl
. This is chicken, egg, and noodles.

On the Race you tend to get excited about/gravitate towards anything that reminds you of home.

Enter: Bread of Life
This is an amazing restaurant that serves Western food, but what makes it awesome is that it is a restaurant that employs the deaf. In Vietnam, the deaf aren’t even considered 2nd class citizens. So a missionary couple began Bread of Life to give deaf people a skill set and bring them out of the negative light that their culture has placed them in.

The first time I came here I got a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a cherry coke. It was seriously the best cheeseburger I’ve ever had.

As you are all aware there is a little American holiday in November known as Thanksgiving. Coming into the Race I expected to be eating random Vietnamese food and just being with my team of 7. Well, God blew that expectation out of the water.
I spent Thanksgiving eating a real American Thanksgiving dinner at Bread of Life, and got to spend it with 28 World Racers. It was a time full of good food, great company, and amazing worship and thankfulness.
Our dinner included turkey, stuffing, corn casserole, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, a roll, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, peach iced tea, and I added a mint hot chocolate.

That’s been my month in food. Obviously, this is not everything I ate, just the highlights. Nothing too weird. Maybe next month…

Oh, and I made a little friend at one of the restaurants. It just jumped right up in my lap…
