And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Romans 5:3-5
Tribulation leads to perseverance.
And perseverance brings proven character.
Proven character, hope.
And hope does not disappoint.
I often wake up feeling like a train has hit me. My life has changed so drastically over this past year, and even more so in the last two months — that I am often unsure of who I am as well as who God has called me to be.
I am overwhelmed at the amount of changes and how quickly they have taken place.
These words in Romans 5 are ones to cling to as a follower of Christ — especially in a season that is trying, exhausting and overwhelming.
Paul reminds us in his letter to the Romans that tribulation allows God to refine us. Without tribulation –perseverance, character and hope would not be made manifest. Without tribulation, I would not be becoming who God has created me to be. Without tribulation, I would be desiring to rely on myself rather than the God of the Universe (trust me, I continue to wrestle with this daily). But, somehow, tribulation causes us to seek God more fully. Which allows us to persevere in prayer, in God's Word and in His promise. And through that perseverance, God somehow refines our very character. And after all, He gives us a hope that DOES NOT disappoint.
I don't get it.
God's ways our NOT my ways.
This passage gives me a lense to view my current circumstances and the unknown. It gives me hope to know that God is refining me and making me more like Himself.
I know this next year of my life is going to be one of tribulation, perseverance, character and hope.
God's ways are far better than my own.
