My first year here in Morocco I had the opportunity to work with two fifth graders who wanted to start up an Elementary Community Service club. The school I work at has had one for the middle school and high school students but there was nothing for the upper elementary students. My first year here I was teaching third grade but was asked to help start up the club with the fifth graders. Over the past three years I have worked with many students through this club.
The club consists of third through fifth grade students who are interested in helping out in our school and in the community. This past year I moved down in grades so I have not been able to run the community service club but last weekend I had the opportunity to volunteer with the students. We took a group of students to a nursing home. The conditions they live in are not great. They do not have very much and do not get a lot of visitors.
It was a great experience for my students and for myself. The students all collected blankets and treats to take with us. They gave each person at the home a blanket, socks, toothpaste and treats. It was so great to see students who come from homes with everything to be giving up their time and things. The kids spent an hour sitting around and playing games with different people and talking with them. The kids and the adults all had smiles on their faces when we left. It was great to see the little kids be so giving! 🙂
