Thailand is amazing! One of the small things that I love about Thailand is that it is pretty progressive, which means internet is widely accessible. I just have to walk 5 minutes out of the YWAM base to a 24 hour internet place with comfy leather chairs all for 10 baht which is equal to 30 American cents. After 3 months of very limited internet, it is a treat and a blessing! I say this all because I was so excited, I was thinking I can write a blog everyday and keep people really updated on life here. Well, my last blog was on Sunday and now it is Wednesday, but I hope to pick it up from here. And I also splurged and am currently spending 60 baht or $2 to post this blog. We have been very busy that last few days.
This month Morgan, Candice, and myself along with the girls from Team 61 and Anne from Team Revolution will be joining Nightlight Design Co. Ministries. We met with one of the founders on Monday and were given a briefing on the ministry. Nightlight’s focus is “bringing light to women and children throught physical, emotional, and spiritual healing, and through economic development.” (Nightlight Brochure) Nightlilght has five main goals: “1 – To provide alternative employment for women who have been, or who are at risk of being, sexually exploited. 2 – To offer holistic opportunities for life transformation and social re-integraetion to women leavnig situations of sexual exploitation. 3 – To provide emergency relief for sexual exploited women and children. 4 – To protect children at risk of sexual exploitation ad to educate on danger awareness. 5 – To build awareness among local andi nternational advocates on the issues of women and children in prostitution and on global human trafficking for sexual purposes.” (NightLight Brochure) All that to say, that Night Light is a business where sexually exploited women can come to work, to earn a living other than working in the bars. The women are involved in making jewelry and also attend worship each morning, English classes, Bible studies, etc. The jewelry is beautiful. I actually tried to make some today with some women. It was much harder than it looks. They sell jewelry on-line. Please check out their website at www.nightlightbangkok.com to find out more information and browse the beautiful jewelry. ALL profits go directly to the women! So get out your checkbooks.
When we met with one of the founders she gave us a long list of things we will be able to help with ranging from painting to teaching English, to going to bars at night to reach out to girls to conducting health surveys to doing inventory, and so much more. I am so excited to work with this ministry and can’t wait to see how God uses us during this time!
**Please note that this month my blogs may contain information about prostitution, human trafficking, etc so if there are any young readers, caution maybe needed.
