This is the last month! We are working with Kids International Ministries in Cainta Riza, Manila, Philippines. What have I done this month? Things. A little bit of this, some more of that, and quite a bit of…. Take a look at the list below to see different ministry activities in which I participated.

Construction

  • Scrape paint
  • Paint walls and ceilings in another room
    Help make a church floor
  • Fill 5 gallon buckets with sand and dump them with the dry concrete
  • Fill same buckets with gravel and add to pile
  • Add water using said buckets
  • Create a chain and pass mixed concrete to final destination using the same buckets
  • Repeat until the entire church floor is poured

Feedings

  • Ride in vehicle with containers of nearly boiling food
  • Upon arriving at location, call out, “feeding” multiple times
  • Use ladles to dish out food until it runs out
  • Play with children and repeatedly answer, “what is your name?”
  • Give lots of high-fives

Children’s home

  • Babysit young children who will climb on everything
  • Become a human jungle gym
  • Work with your team to lead a devotional
  • Take turns showing and being shown dance moves with the children

Pregnancy clinic

  • How to perform a regular check-up
  • Receive a quick lesson on how to read charts and take blood pressure
  • Take blood pressure of the mothers who show up
  • Ask them to step on a scale and place the number in the appropriate spot on the chart
  • Take their temperature
  • Verify gestational age
  • Find top of uterus and measure
  • Check baby’s heartbeat
  • Ensure all appropriate spots on chart are filled out and move on to next patient

Teacher

  • Helped a student with her chemistry. She knew how to look up the needed information but she didn’t really understand what all the big scientific words meant so I did my best to explain in simpler terms.
  • Sat in on three art classes at the school next door. Most of the kids are more talented than I so it was an adventure in humility and willingness to share.

Other

  • Get a massage (Yes, our host said it counted as ministry.)
  • Sing with Rona (favorite time was in a jeepney)
  • Fill the dog’s water bowl
  • Clean and rearrange a gym
  • Unload a shipping container
  • Sort and store donated supplies

Weather permitting we will be heading to Banaue to hike tonight. There I’ll have the chance to process with my team and participate in trail and hostel ministry. We will return to KIM on the 19th for our final debrief before heading home.

EDIT: Due to the typhoon that hit a few days ago, nobody left the other night. Last night, 7 people headed to Banaue and 12 of us stayed behind.

Those of us remaining at KIM will be helping with disaster relief efforts. Last night we handed out blankets to about 70 families who had to relocate due to flooding. For next few days, we will be helping cook and deliver food to evacuees.

Some of us may also have a chance to help deliver babies.
