I love rock climbing. And by rock climbing, I mean jumping around in rocky rivers and other terrain and calling it rock climbing. I would not, by any means, consider myself a good rock climber. In fact, I’ve never actually been to a climbing gym. But the Lord has taken this passion and used it to describe our relationship in this next season.

When you’re rock climbing, you can’t look at what’s to your side, whats below you, or the rocks way above you. You can’t look at the vastness of the rock that you’re trying to climb. You just need to be focused on the next rock. The next thing that your hand will grab or the next place to put your foot. If you get too caught up looking at the height of the rock you’re about to scale, it’s easy to lose motivation. To be discouraged by the task ahead and want to quit.

The Lord keeps reassuring me that in this next season, I just need to cling to the Rock. I need to cling to the only One that is solid. The only One that I’m able to hold on to. The only One that is constant. The only One that will be with me in every second.

He’s reminding me that in order to rock climb, I need to keep my face to the rock and my back to the world. As soon as I turn around and have something else at the front of my mind, that’s when I lose my grip.

It’s okay to look around at the beauty that’s been created around me. It’s okay to look above or below and yell out instructions to those that He’s put in my community. But my focus always, always needs to be on the Rock.

I shouldn’t be so focused on the adventure that I’m having that I forget to share it with others. I just need to be so up close and personal with the Rock that the most natural thing for me to do is to declare its beauty and invite others to climb alongside me.

I need to be constantly in awe of the Rock. Picking apart the qualities of it. Observing all of the intricate designs that are sketched into its side. Feeling all of the ridges and holds that are naturally formed. Getting to know it in an intimate level because it is the only thing that I cling to.
