The World Race is weird. I think we can all agree on that. A bunch of 18 and 19 year old kids decided to take 9 months of their lives to travel and bring the gospel. They left their parents that they’ve never been away from (besides maybe summer camp). They traded warm beds and Chick-fil-a for bucket showers and squatty potties.

That’s weird.

Who does that?!

There’s also this weird balance of trying to make it feel like real life but always knowing that what you’re doing is really not normal at all. You want to be friends with your squad mates in traditional ways but… you can’t just drive to the nearest Starbucks or movie theater.

Having fun on the Race is weird. Being friends with people on the Race is weird. You often have to be creative and find new forms of “fun” that you would never think to do with your friends at home.

Here’s a short list of some of my most fun moments with my squad mates :

– Having a watermelon eating contest
– Playing knee hockey
– Going night swimming in the ocean
– Playing ultimate in the mud
– Spontaneous dance parties
– Trying (and failing miserably) to climb up a cliff
– Making up Christian lyrics to raunchy rap songs
– Trying to slap each other’s calves
– Laying on the floor talking about toes
– Playing “Big Booty” but changing the words to “Kardashian”
– Lots of rummy, Dutch blitz, spades, and b.s.
– Wandering the city looking for good churros
– Playing Pictionary
– Wrestling each other
– Playing Body Body
– Rap battles
– Jumping around in sleeping bag liners
– Knock knock jokes that make absolutely no sense
– Taking funny pictures
– Trying to do handstands
– Going ice skating in a mall
– Finding the nearest McDonalds
– Camping and star gazing on a mountain

This is just a small list of all the fun things we’ve done on the Race. It’s easy to love the World Race when you have a community as fun, creative, deep, and inspiring as mine.
