Marijan
and Bozena, the pastor and his wife of the church we’re staying at,
have kept us busy since Wednesday, but they’ve also been supremely
generous to us. A few events of the weekend that made us smile in
between painting sessions:
-
We
went to an elementary school accordion recital on Friday night. The
finale was an accordion chorus rendition of Celine Dion’s “My
Heart Will Go On.” Our joy knew no bounds. -
In
the event that my future husband does not want to dance to Aladdin’s
“A Whole New World,” option two is now “My Heart Will Go On,”
but only if performed by a dozen pre-pubescent accordion players. -
We
also learned that Croatians don’t do standing ovations. -
On
the way to lunch at Marijan’s house on Saturday, the middle window on
the right side of Marijan’s van fell out of the vehicle. -
Matt
fixed the window back at Marijan’s. I really hope he drives that red
van forever. -
Saturday
night, Marijan, Bozena, Joe, Alice (Joe’s wife), and Olga (our precious translating doctor) took us out for ice cream. We were all fading
before 9:30. We are officially old people. -
The
ice cream was good, though. -
On
Sunday, after church, our hosts took us out for a picnic on top of a
mountain outside the town. We hiked (mostly downhill) for about
three hours on trails once we were there. -
Hiking
downhill, while awesome, really puts a strain on your legs. Mine
were shaking by the end of the trek. -
We
watched Kung Fu Panda last night as Team Petrunity. We put
mattresses down on the floor and ate cookies. It was pretty
glorious. -
I
miss movie nights.
Tuesday evening, Marijan is driving us back to Osijek to reunite with the
other half of our teams. As amazing as this week has been, I’m
looking forward to seeing the other half of Petra again.
