And because I love lists so much, here is a list of things I’ve learned since starting the Race.
– There should be a session on proper bucket shower technique at training camp.
– You will never, ever know where you are going until you get there.
– You will also never, ever know what you are doing until you show up for ministry that day.
– Conversations about body functions take on a whole new level of importance.
– If you are showering more often than twice a week, you are staying at the WR equivalent of the Ritz-Carlton, and should really invite the rest of the squad to stay with you (it’s only polite).
– After a month straight of meals of bread, rice starts to look like a really appealing substitute.
– “What? We’re eating VEGETABLES tonight?” is a cry of joy, in contrast to what it was at the age of five.
– Going to the grocery store or the market without a calculator causes stress and headaches, especially if you’re not a math person.
– Stuffing your bag with sugar packets from every coffee shop you find internet at is completely acceptable.
– Walking into hotels and restaurants to use the restroom is encouraged when public bathrooms cost money.
– Skype is the greatest invention in the history of technology, except when your internet connection is so bad that your call to your parents gets cut off every five minutes like clockwork.
– When you forget to bring cold weather clothing, don’t fear. Someone on your squad will be getting rid of a sweater or jacket sometime before you need it.
– Best way to liven up your wardrobe: borrow everyone else’s clothes.
– Best way to cut down on laundry: wear the same outfit for a week or more. Including underwear.
We’ll see what wisdom Africa and Asia teach me.
