Yep. The adventure has begun. I am currently staying at a church building way up in the mountains of the Dominican Republic with no flushing toilet, no working sinks, windows that kids can easily open to peer in on us, and no running water. BUT it also has an amazing view of the mountain behind us, a large barrel of multi-purpose water with a broken watering can to retrieve it, drinking water to buy just down the road, and electricity most of the time! Yes, God is good. 🙂

Yesterday, after we arrived here, Gregorio (our contact) walked us around the town and then we broke off into groups to go buy things for dinner. I’m not sure exactly when it was that I realized that we might be in different conditions than had been explained to us at launch. It might have been when we realized we had no running water. Or maybe when Peter and I hiked up half a mountain, winding around small tin roof houses to buy our dinner’s chicken from a woman in a wooden shed. Or maybe even when we realized this town has no restaurant and only a few small stores. Regardless, this place and these people are wonderful.

I’m beginning to get over my inhibitions with stumbling through Spanish, and although I haven’t practiced in years, I am amazed with how much we’re able to communicate with the little I can recall! Last night, Don and I sang songs and had “Spanish comprehension competitions” with some of the young adults here at the church. And today I reverted back to my 12-year-old self by relying on hand clapping games to communicate with the Dominican kids. 🙂

Internet access is very hard to come by this month, so this may be all I’m able to write for a little while.

It is such a blessing to be here!
